Hiking the Bay to Bay Trail in Fort Collins: A Scenic, Kid-Friendly Evening Adventure

Table of Contents

When the evening breeze hits and you’re craving some fresh air (without, you know, summiting a mountain), the Bay to Bay Trail in Fort Collins is an easy, beautiful win.

I hiked this with a few fellow moms recently—two of us pregnant, toddlers at home, and zero desire for anything too intense—and it was perfect. Keep reading for the full scoop and my best mom-approved tips!

Trail Overview

  • 🗺️ Location: Horsetooth Reservoir

  • 👣 Distance: 1.8 miles one way / 3.6 miles out and back

  • 🚶‍♀️ Difficulty: Super easy — perfect for pregnancy and kids who want to walk a bit

  • 🌅 Best time: Evenings! That reservoir breeze? Chef’s kiss.

  • 🅿️ Where to park: South Bay Trail Parking lot or Blue Sky Trailhead & Parking

  • 🍎 Extras: Picnic tables at both parking lots — bring snacks like we did!

What I Loved

  • The single-file trail makes it feel peaceful and almost meditative.

  • Views of the reservoir and boats the whole way—plus three deer encounters (!), including one literally right next to the trail.

  • It’s long enough to feel like you got out, but easy enough to do without breaking a sweat.

  • Kid-approved adventure without committing to a full hiking day.

Quick Tips Before You Go

  • No connector—this is out and back, so plan for 3.6 miles total.

  • The trail maps at Horsetooth have not been updated (as of July 2025) with the new Bay to Bay trail but just trust the process!

  • Wear good shoes and bring water (and snacks!)

  • Great for moms, kids, or a low-key solo recharge.
